Re:     Bamberg County EMS Contract with Thorne Ambulance Service to Remain Intact

Bamberg, South Carolina (March 2024) – During Thursday night’s Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Committee meeting, Bamberg County and Thorne Ambulance Service solidified their mutual commitment to honor the terms of their contract.

Last summer, Bamberg County entered a five-year contract with Thorne Ambulance Service and has developed a strong working relationship with the emergency medical provider. Bamberg and Barnwell Counties originally entered a regional agreement with Thorne; however, Barnwell has failed to meet the terms of that agreement. As a result, Thorne will terminate its contract with Barnwell County, effective May 31, 2024.

Despite this unexpected change to the original regional partnership with Barnwell County, Bamberg County, and Thorne Ambulance Service, Bamberg and Thorne will continue to honor their contracted agreement. Thorne’s CEO Ryan Thorne said, “After unsuccessful attempts to reach a resolution of differences,” Thorne will cease providing emergency services to Barnwell County on May 31, 2024. Mr. Thorne elaborated; “Current Thorne Ambulance Service employees will be offered employment in nearby markets…and we hope to retain our top performers to work in Bamberg. We do not anticipate any changes in the number or quality of resources in Bamberg County and intend to do business as usual.”

District One County Councilman Phil Myers emphasized the need for both Bamberg County and Thorne to honor the terms of their contract to ensure “Bamberg citizens get the best possible trained EMS personnel and service.” Furthermore, District Four County Councilman Spencer Donaldson iterated the importance of maintaining a “strong working relationship with Thorne because that is what is in the best interests of our constituents.”

“Our citizens deserve state of the art EMS service and equipment, and we will continue to partner with Thorne Ambulance Service toward that endeavor,” said County Council Chairman Evert Comer, Jr.

County Administrator Joey Preston said, “Our primary goal is to ensure Thorne and Bamberg County work together to honor the terms of our contract so Bamberg citizens will benefit from a much improved EMS service. We also hope to add a third ambulance in the near future.”

Bamberg County Council Adopts Resolutions to Enhance Traffic Safety FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

To:      News Media

From: Bamberg County Administration

Date:  March 5, 2024

Re:     Bamberg County Council Adopts Resolution to Enhance Traffic Safety

Bamberg, South Carolina (March 2024) – During Monday night’s meeting, Bamberg County Council unanimously adopted two resolutions to enhance traffic safety surrounding Andrew Jackson Academy and Clearpond Fire Department. To reduce speed and enhance overall traffic safety, County Council supports the installation of flashing speed limit sign assemblies near Andrew Jackson Academy and a flashing warning beacon near the Clearpond Fire Department, Station 4.

Andrew Jackson Academy is located approximately at mile point 9.8 along US-601 (Broxton Bridge Road), south of the City of Bamberg and has 300 students in grades K-12 and 25 staff members. Currently, ingress and egress to the school occur via a single entrance driveway located on the northern boundary of the site and a single exit driveway located on the southern boundary of the site. The driveways are connected by an internal one-way road. US-601 is a two-lane rural highway with a posted speed limit of 55 mph and an annual average daily traffic count of 1800 vehicles per day, and there are no turn lanes on US-601 to access the school, forcing all turning vehicles to fully decelerate within the throughway. Therefore, Bamberg County Council fully endorses the installation of flashing school speed limit sign assemblies near Andrew Jackson Academy that will help reduce vehicle speeds during school arrival and dismissal times and provide an increased level of security for motorists and pedestrians along this section of US-601.

Additionally, Bamberg County Council fully endorses the installation of a flashing beacon at the intersection of S-59 (Clear Pond Road) and US-601 (Broxton Bridge Road), located approximately at mile point 10.04 along US-601, south of the City of Bamberg. The flashing beacon will serve as an additional warning to motorists approaching the Clearpond Fire Department, Station 4, which provides essential rural fire and EMS services for the surrounding community.  Ingress and egress to the station occur through a full access driveway on US-601 and a second full access driveway on S-59.  Emergency vehicles entering US-601 (Broxton Bridge Road) and S-59 are required to stop within the driveways and wait for traffic to clear before entering the roadway.  US-601 is a two-lane rural highway with posted 55 mph speed limit signs and an annual average daily traffic count of 1800 vehicles per day.  Conversely, Clear Pond Road is a two-lane rural highway without posted speed limit signs approaching the stop condition at US-601 with an annual average daily traffic count of 3100 vehicles per day.  The installation of a flashing beacon will increase the safety level at this intersection by providing a warning to motorists of possible emergency vehicles entering the roadway.

Bamberg County Council Chairman Evert Comer, Jr. said, “Nothing is more important than the safety of our constituents, especially that of our children. These added safety features will serve as another reminder for motorists to proceed with extra caution.”

“These resolutions demonstrate Bamberg County’s commitment to the security of our citizens and the ability of our emergency responders to do their jobs as safely and efficiently as possible,” noted County Administrator Joey Preston.

Bamberg City and County Officials Working to Expedite Tornado Clean-Up Process but Need Property Owners to Comply FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Re:     Bamberg City and County Officials Working to Expedite Tornado Clean-Up Process but Need Property Owners to Comply

Bamberg, South Carolina (February 2024) – Over a month after a Category EF-2 tornado struck Bamberg, City and County officials continue to work with property owners, insurance companies, the SC Emergency Management Division, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Department of Commerce, the SC Department of Transportation, the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control, Senator Brad Hutto, and Representative Justin Bamberg to expedite the clean-up process on Highway 301/Main Street. A structural engineering firm and the building inspector have declared several damaged structures unsafe and a danger to the public, and in most cases, determined the affected buildings must be completely demolished and cleared before city roads and streets can be reopened. Demolition is necessary because the buildings and/or their facades could collapse into the street, putting Bamberg citizens at risk.

Property owners of unsafe buildings on Highway 301 have been notified of the need to take immediate action to clean up their properties. The safety and health of all Bamberg citizens is the primary concern for City and County officials who implore property owners of the affected buildings to immediately comply with the demolition process.

Nikki Haley Makes Campaign Stop in Bamberg FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

To:      News Media

From: Bamberg County Administration

Date:  February 13, 2024

Re:     Nikki Haley Makes Campaign Stop in Bamberg

Bamberg, South Carolina (February 2024) – Despite the chill in the air, Bamberg was in the spotlight this morning, garnering national attention as a current presidential candidate, former United States Ambassador and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley made a campaign stop at Veterans Park. Haley has launched a two-week “Beast of the Southeast” bus tour across the state as early voting for the SC Republican Presidential Primary is already underway.

County Administrator Joey Preston welcomed Nikki Haley as she descended the bus and gifted her with two Bamberg County Challenge Coins, one for her and one for her husband Michael, who serves in the South Carolina Army National Guard and is deployed in Africa. Bamberg Mayor Nancy Foster introduced Haley and shared memories of Nikki and her family, stating, “You’ve come a long way.”

A Bamberg native and the first female elected as South Carolina Governor, Ms. Haley made her case to a crowd of about 200, stating she is the only GOP candidate who can win the general election. She and former President Donald Trump are the last two remaining candidates seeking the Republican nomination.

Haley’s Bamberg visit came just one month after a category EF-2 tornado caused about $4 million in damage to area businesses and homes. The rubble served as a stark backdrop for the occasion. “It’s a great day in South Carolina when I can come home,” she said. She later noted, “This town has been through so much…this sweet, little town is the town that raised me and taught me strength, grace, faith, and that no matter what, neighbors take care of neighbors.” Acknowledging the devastation of the tornado, Haley said, “But I know if there’s any town that can get through it, it’s Bamberg.” Former Governor Haley spent about an hour in Bamberg before heading to her next stop and plans to make at least 30 stops in SC before Election Day.

“The resilient and humble nature of the Bamberg community was on full display for the world to see. We are thankful for the recognition and concern expressed by Nikki Haley and other prominent leaders across the state and country. While we have a long road to recovery ahead of us, we will not waiver and will only grow stronger,” said County Administrator Joey Preston.

Job Well Done! Bamberg County Earns Unmodified (clean) Audit FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

To:      News Media

From: Bamberg County Administration

Date:  February 6, 2024

Re:     Job Well Done! Bamberg County Earns Unmodified (clean) 2023 Audit

Bamberg, South Carolina (February 2024) – During last night’s County Council meeting, Controller/CPA Gina Smith and Audit Manager/CPA Will Walls of Love, Bailey, and Associates presented the FYE June 30, 2023 Bamberg County Audit Report.

Bamberg County earned an unmodified (clean) audit opinion for the ninth consecutive year, which demonstrates good fiscal stewardship and is the most important measure of financial stability. An unmodified audit provides a sense of pride for elected officials and employees, builds/confirms confidence in management, and positively impacts interest rates.

According to Controller Gina Smith, “Once again, Bamberg County has earned an unmodified audit opinion on our fiscal year-end financial statements. This exemplary result is achieved with a small but powerful team of employees who work diligently to follow appropriate financial policies, procedures, and GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles). GAAP is a set of rules, standards, and procedures issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board and the Governmental Accounting Standards Board. The ultimate goal of GAAP is to ensure that the County’s financial statements are complete, consistent, and comparable. I am proud to be a part of such a sincere, responsible, and successful team!”

Audit Manager Will Walls commended the entire Bamberg County Financial Staff: “Bamberg is so fortunate to have such a skilled financial team, which is not always possible for smaller counties with limited resources. Even larger counties struggle to recruit such top notch professionals. Honestly, Gina and the rest of the team have made my job much easier.” When asked by Chairman Evert Comer, Jr. if Bamberg’s financial team is as good as that of larger counties, Mr. Walls emphatically confirmed, “It is even better than some!”

Chairman Comer further expressed his pride in the 2023 audit: “Job well done! Many may not realize the significance a clean audit has on Bamberg County’s ability to continue to do business everyday while still growing the County economically.”

According to County Administrator Joey Preston, “Bamberg County completed its 2023 audit prior to December 31, 2023—earlier than ever before.” Preston continued, “For Bamberg County to complete our compliant audit in record time with a limited budget and staff is extraordinary. I am so thankful for the hard work of our financial team who has once again gone above and beyond the call of duty.”

SCAC President Makes Unprecedented Appeal on Bamberg County's Behalf FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Re:     SCAC President Makes Unprecedented Appeal on Bamberg County's Behalf

Bamberg, South Carolina (February 2024) –In an unprecedented gesture of camaraderie and goodwill, South Carolina Association of Counties (SCAC) President and Pickens County Council Vice Chairman Roy Costner, III has made an appeal to the other 45 counties in the state to assist Bamberg County with tornado recovery efforts. President Costner sent a letter to his colleagues asking them to help mitigate “an unexpected hardship on an area already facing economic obstacles.”

Costner’s request comes just a couple weeks after he met with Bamberg, Barnwell, and Allendale leaders to discuss common challenges and opportunities for the region and nearly a month after $4 million in damage occurred in Bamberg County as a result of the Category EF-2 tornado.

“As county leaders and public servants, we all know the tough times emergency response and

recovery brings to our communities. What makes us resilient is our compassion and willingness to support our friends and neighbors in need. At one time or another, each of our counties has faced a crisis. Knowing we are not alone helps ease this burden. If your county is able to offer in-kind support or collaboration, please reach out to Bamberg County Emergency Preparedness Manager Tiffany Bryant at bryantt@bambergcounty.sc.gov,” said Costner.

Bamberg County Council Chairman Evert Comer, Jr. said the letter “touched his heart and he appreciates President Costner’s efforts to help Bamberg County during this challenging ordeal. When the time comes, Bamberg will also be there to help those in need.”

Additionally, Bamberg County Administrator Joey Preston said he is grateful for President Costner’s support and that he has never “seen anything like this before.” Preston elaborated, “Having such a strong tornado strike in January while being so geographically isolated is no normal occurrence, and the economic impact has frankly been devastating. We certainly appreciate all the help we can get as well as President Costner’s kind gesture. We must all stick together during these unprecedented times.”

Bamberg County Council Unanimously Approved Emergency Declaration FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

To:      News Media

From: Bamberg County Administration

Date:  January 24, 2024

Re:     Bamberg County Council Unanimously Approved Emergency Declaration

Bamberg, South Carolina (January 2024) – Bamberg County Council held a special meeting Monday night and voted unanimously to approve an Emergency Declaration, “declaring that an emergency… affecting the life, health, safety, and/or property of the people of the County…exists with respect to damage caused by a storm on January 9, 2024 and authorizing appropriate action to be taken in connection with said emergency.” The declaration took immediate effect after the vote.

County officials are also working diligently with the South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD) to determine if citizens with property damage caused by the storm will qualify for individual Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) or Small Business Administration (SBA) assistance. FEMA, SBA, and SCEMD representatives are scheduled to be on site in Bamberg today to assess the tornado damage and make a determination if enough damage has been done to qualify for individual assistance.

During the meeting, County Administrator Joey Preston first thanked Bamberg's “fire departments, police department, sheriff's department, EMS, Emergency Services, and surrounding counties for their immediate assistance on the ground.” Preston also reminded Bamberg County residents and business owners to report any damage created by the storm to the Bamberg Emergency Management Division (BEMD) if they have not already done so, which will allow officials to share the most accurate, complete, and current information with FEMA and SBA.

Preston added, “Prompt action is required so Bamberg County may meet the February 8 deadline to ask for a declaration to obtain individual assistance. Additionally, all appropriate insurance claims must be filed before any assistance can be approved.”

Chairman Evert Comer, Jr. said, “It’s time for all hands on deck. We are grateful to the surrounding counties for sharing their resources with us during this challenging situation. Bamberg County will be there to reciprocate should the need arise.”

Additionally, Public Information Officer Alisha Moore invited community members to a “Keep Bamberg Beautiful” clean-up effort that will occur on Calhoun Street this Friday, January 26, at 10 a.m.

*The majority of storm damage was concentrated in the downtown area. According to the SCEMD, thus far, we have accounted for approximately 20-30 Bamberg businesses damaged by the storm, with 10 being completely destroyed, including South Carolina Oak to Barrel, the historic Old City Hall, area restaurants, and several storefronts. Bamberg County and City buildings were also damaged, including the Courthouse (roof) and City Hall (minor). Total numbers will be revised and updated as the damage assessments continue.

Keep Bamberg County Beautiful Spearheads Successful Clean-up in Tornado Aftermath FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Re:     Keep Bamberg County Beautiful Spearheads Successful Clean-up in Tornado Aftermath

Bamberg, South Carolina (January 2024) – Resilient, Resourceful, and Active…

Keep Bamberg County Beautiful (KBCB) and Bamberg County Public Information Officer Alisha Moore coordinated a successful community clean-up last Friday.

To help with the ongoing tornado clean-up effort, 40 volunteers from various public sectors gathered on Calhoun Street to collect 60 bags of trash, which may not appear remarkable to some, but actually captures the true spirit of Bamberg County: one of resilience, resourcefulness, and action. As devastating as the aftermath of the Category EF-2 tornado has been to Bamberg County residents, business owners, and leaders, this spunky community refuses to allow that to define, deter, or discourage them.

The impressive group of volunteers included:

  • County Councilman Larry Haynes, District 3
  • The Denmark Technical College Basketball Team
  • All for One Bike Club
  • Edisto Electric
  • Bamberg Health Coalition
  • SaltCatcher Farms
  • KBCB Board Members
  • Bamberg Disability and Special Needs Board
  • Bamberg County Board of Public Works

When asked why it was so important to venture outside of his district to participate in the Calhoun Street Clean-up, Councilman Larry Haynes said, “Bamberg has always been a family and always will be. When one of us hurts, we all hurt. I was simply doing my part to help my family.”

Bamberg County Public Information Officer Alisha Moore, who recently made Bamberg her home, reflected on how, despite the odds against them, no one should ever “count Bamberg County out.” She added, “It’s in the toughest times that a community can show not just the rest of the country but also themselves what they’re made of. And in this moment following the devastation of an EF-2 tornado, Bamberg County has clearly demonstrated how a united community can persevere. SCDOT, County, and City Begin Tornado Cleanup FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

To:      News Media

From: Bamberg County Administration

Date:  January 19, 2024

Re:     SCDOT, County, and City Begin Tornado Cleanup

Bamberg, South Carolina (January 2024) – Nine days after a Category EF-2 tornado hit Bamberg, County Structural Engineer Mark W. Lorah gave the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) approval to begin the clean-up process on a portion of Highway 301 in Downtown Bamberg. However, damaged structures are still off-limits until engineers declare them safe. SCDOT brought in about eight dump trucks Thursday morning and made significant progress in the removal of debris and bricks from Highway 301, but the road and the affected downtown area will remain closed until damaged structures have been removed or repaired.

Furthermore, Bamberg City Council members and Mayor Nancy Foster held a special meeting Thursday night and voted to approve an Emergency Ordinance, “declaring that an emergency… affecting the life, health, safety, and/or property of the people of the City…exists with respect to damage caused by a storm on January 9, 2024 and authorizing appropriate action to be taken in connection with said emergency.” The ordinance took immediate effect after the vote.

Bamberg County Council has also called a special meeting to occur next Monday, January 22 to vote on a County emergency ordinance. County officials are also working diligently with the South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD) to determine if citizens with property damage caused by the storm will qualify for individual FEMA assistance. An update is forthcoming.

*The majority of storm damage was concentrated in the downtown area. According to the SCEMD, approximately 20-30 Bamberg businesses were damaged by the storm with 10 being completely destroyed, including South Carolina Oak to Barrel, area restaurants, and store fronts. Several Bamberg County and City buildings were also damaged, including the historic Old City Hall (total loss), the Courthouse (roof), and City Hall (minor). Total numbers will be revised and updated as the damage assessments continue.

Bamberg County and City Officials Offer Assistance to Local Barrel Manufacturing Company after Tornado Destruction FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

To:      News Media

From: Bamberg County Administration

Date:  January 17, 2024

Re:     Bamberg County and City Officials Offer Assistance to Local Barrel Manufacturing Company after Tornado Destruction

Bamberg, South Carolina (January 2024) – And that's where the miracle comes in.

Despite the total destruction of his whiskey barrel manufacturing facility just outside Bamberg City limits and the frightening entrapment of General Manager David Hutto, South Carolina Oak to Barrel CEO and Owner Eddie Hill said he hopes they can rebuild and remain in Bamberg, stating, “We like Bamberg. Y'all have been good to us.” Hill was on site Thursday to assess the damage to SC Oak to Barrel, which just opened in Bamberg less than two years ago and has approximately 40 employees.

Mr. Hill was joined by City and County officials, including Mayor Nancy Foster, County Council Chairman Evert Comer, Jr. and County Council members Spencer Donaldson and Jonathan Goodman, County Administrator Joey Preston, Sheriff Kenneth Bamberg, and Police Chief James Smoak.  Both City and County leaders assured Mr. Hill they will do everything in their power to help with the rebuilding process.

County Administrator Joey Preston offered to assist in securing storage and office space for the whiskey barrel manufacturing company with Preston noting, “You guys helped put Bamberg on the map; there has been so much excitement around this company, and we want to keep you here.” Mayor Nancy Foster was visibly relieved when Hill declared his intention to keep the facility in Bamberg if possible, stating, “Thank you so much…we need you, and our citizens need these jobs.” She also shared her intentions of meeting with the South Carolina Alliance of Economic Development to seek assistance on Oak to Barrel’s behalf.

County Council Chairman Evert Comer, Jr. stated that despite the devastating property loss, “Thankfully, we are still here and must face the reality of rebuilding and move forward. We are grateful SC Oak to Barrel invested in the Bamberg community almost two years ago, and we will support them in every way we can and also seek assistance from our regional, state, and federal partners.”

While the damage to the facility was astounding, the fact that no loss of life or injuries occurred is miraculous to say the least. SC Oak to Barrel General Manager David Hutto had a frighteningly close call, however. He explained that minutes after dismissing his employees, the EF2 tornado shattered windows and ripped the roof off the building. Hutto had no choice but to hunker down in a corner, and once it was safe to do so, climb out of what had once been a window.

Oak to Barrel CEO Eddie Hill said they have insurance on the building, but the most important thing is that everyone is safe. “The buildings and stuff can be replaced. That just costs money. But the loss of life cannot be replaced. And that’s where the miracle comes in.”

Re:     Evert Comer, Jr. and Clint Carter Become the 2024 Bamberg County Council and Vice Chairman

Bamberg, South Carolina (January 2024) – During the January 8 County Council meeting, District 6’s Evert Comer, Jr. and District 7’s Clint Carter were appointed 2024 Chairman and Vice Chairman, respectively.

Outgoing Chairman Dr. Jonathan Goodman passed the gavel to his successor, Mr. Evert Comer, Jr., who served as the 2023 Vice Chairman. After Chairman Comer’s appointment, the Council also voted unanimously to appoint Councilman Clint Carter as the 2024 Vice Chair.

On behalf of the entire County Council and Administration, Mr. Comer presented Dr. Goodman with a plaque of appreciation for his distinguished service as the 2023 Chairman. During Goodman’s tenure, Bamberg County enjoyed several victories, including the grand opening and dedication of Veterans Park as well as the Ed Darnell Law Enforcement Center, the Veterans Affairs Office, and the Health Department (all housed in the former hospital). Additionally, the Bamberg County Council and administration secured federal grants to expand broadband internet and improve water quality for their constituents.

Bamberg Residents Should Report Storm Damage, File Insurance Claims FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

To:      News Media

From: Bamberg County Administration

Date:  January 12, 2024

Re:     Bamberg Residents Should Report Storm Damage, File Insurance Claims

Bamberg, South Carolina (January 2024) – Bamberg County residents who experienced property damage due to Tuesday’s storm should report the damage to county emergency services. As cleanup from Tuesday’s storm continues, Bamberg County Emergency Services and the South Carolina Emergency Management Division are conducting damage assessments to determine if the impacts of the storm are eligible for federal disaster aid.

According to SCEMD, approximately 20-30 Bamberg businesses were damaged by the storm, with 10 being completely destroyed, including South Carolina Oak to Barrel, area restaurants, and storefronts. Furthermore, about 20 homes were affected, with one being destroyed. Several Bamberg County and City buildings were also damaged, including the historic Old City Hall (total loss), the Courthouse (roof), and City Hall (minor). Total numbers will be revised and updated as the damage assessments continue.

The majority of storm damage was concentrated in the downtown area (Highway 601 and 78 intersection), and once a structural integrity assessment (in progress) is completed, the SC Department of Transportation will coordinate debris clean-up and operations.

Additionally,  residents should contact their insurance companies if they have not already done so. To avoid a duplication of benefits, ALL insurance must be accounted for before a determination of public, individual, or small business assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) or the Small Business Association (SBA) can be conducted.

SCEMD’s Recovery and Mitigation Section Chief Emily Bentley provided the following guidelines for Bamberg residents with tornado property damage:

  • Immediately contact your insurance company.
  • Report damage to Bamberg County Emergency Services at 803-245-3013.
  • Take pictures of storm-caused damage and keep receipts for clean-up-related purchases. Your documentation will help both your insurance claim and county damage assessments. Note: federal disaster recovery programs, if deemed eligible, focus on uninsured losses.
  • Damage assessment is ongoing, which will determine federal assistance availability. If there is enough storm-caused damage to ask for federal assistance, the process of requesting and making it available can take weeks to months.
  • Call 2-1-1 to be connected to local volunteer organizations for clean-up assistance.

Tornado Wreaks Havoc on City of Bamberg, Damaging Downtown Buildings and Small Businesses FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

To:      News Media

From: Bamberg County Administration

Date:  January 9, 2024

Re:     Tornado Wreaks Havoc on City of Bamberg, Damaging Downtown Buildings and Small Businesses

Bamberg, South Carolina (January 2024) – A tornado touched down in the heart of Bamberg, SC, on Tuesday, January 9. While there are no reported injuries or fatalities, extensive damage has been done to downtown buildings, including the historic City Hall and local businesses.

At least four downtown buildings have suffered severe damage, and an excessive amount of debris exists in the downtown area, especially on Highway 601/Main Highway. The downtown area will remain closed until South Carolina Fire Marshals and structural engineers declare the area and surrounding structures safe. There is no definitive timeline for the reopening of Downtown Bamberg; however, County and City officials are working to restore traffic flow, and updates will be posted on our website and social media.

Bamberg County’s Preliminary Damage Assessment Team will seek Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Small Business Association (SBA) recovery funds for assistance; more information will follow. We respectfully ask everyone to adhere to the structural barriers installed for the well-being and safety of all Bamberg citizens and to stay off the affected roads.

Bamberg Mayor Nancey Foster said this is something she’s never seen before: “We’re really sad about downtown where there has been so much growth.”

Local business owner Buzzy Bunch said despite having his and his wife’s antique business reduced to rubble, “We will get together and help everyone out..that’s Bamberg,” assuring that this resilient community will rebuild stronger than ever.

Newly appointed Bamberg County Council Chairman Evert Comer said, “We are devastated by the damage in the heart of Bamberg County but are extremely thankful that no injuries or fatalities have been reported at this time.”
