Bamberg, South Carolina (September 2021) – On Friday, September 17, 2021, Bamberg County Airport participated in South Carolina Aviation Association’s Project Discovery. SCAA’s president, Terry Connorton, visited Bamberg County Airport along with many of the other 58 publicly owned airports in South Carolina with the intention of learning more about the many unique public airports throughout South Carolina. Project Discovery will be used by SCAA to assist in the organization’s advocacy and promotional activities on behalf of the state’s airports.
SCAA is the only state affiliated group for aviation professionals and enthusiasts. The goal of SCAA is to support South Carolina airports through airport development and safety to meet the air transportation economic development needs of South Carolina. “SCAA is thrilled to visit as many public airports in South Carolina as possible through our Project Discovery initiative,” said Terry Connorton. “Our goal is to provide a compilation of South Carolina’s airport system, focusing on what makes each airport unique. It is evident that Bamberg County has made many important improvements to its airport recently. Airports are critical to an area’s economy and are proven economic generators. All types of businesses rely on aviation and airports are a critical part of the state’s transportation infrastructure and economic development. It is wonderful to see the progress that has been made at Bamberg County’s airport, and SCAA is proud to assist in promoting and supporting the efforts. The work done and planned for this airport is critical to develop the infrastructure needed to recruit industry to the area.”
“Bamberg County has worked diligently in the past several years to revitalize the airport,” stated Joey Preston, Bamberg County Administrator. “Capitalizing on multiple grant opportunities, we have completed many airport improvements to include hangar renovations, reduced property tax on aircraft to make the county more competitive, improved the facilities and grounds, installed a fuel pump to sell gas at a very competitive price, and established a partnership with Crosswinds Aviation. We appreciate that SCAA visited Bamberg County’s airport and look forward to a partnership to promote this valuable Bamberg County asset.”
Mr. Connorton was greeted by several Bamberg County elected officials including the five Mayors of Bamberg County, County Council members Spencer Donaldson and Sharon Hammond, Bamberg County Council Chairman Larry Haynes, representatives from SouthernCarolina Alliance, Kay Maxwell, Garrett Dragano, and Laura McKenzie, Dr. Willie Todd, Denmark Technical College President and CEO, Bamberg County Administrator, Joey Preston, Bamberg County Clerk to Council Rose Shepherd, and Allen Cook, Palmetto Rural Telephone Cooperative Engineer.
