Bamberg, South Carolina (June 2017) – In May, the Department of Health and Environmental Control’s Bureau of Environmental Health Services awarded Bamberg County a grant for $14,644.  The Mosquito Control Grant provides funds to purchase additional insecticides and improved spraying equipment. The grant also funds training in effective mosquito control procedures.

Prepared by Bill Johnson, Bamberg County’s Director of Operations, and Mallory Biering, former Keep Bamberg County Beautiful Coordinator, this grant will significantly increase the County’s budget for mosquito control. Licensed technicians will treat new locations. The additional funds mean more visits to each treatment site. Improved spray equipment, including a handheld fogger with attached GPS, allows for more targeted application in hard to reach areas.

“This grant is a huge boost to the County’s current mosquito treatment budget,” said Evert Comer, County Council Chairman. “The staff has done a great job securing grant funds to expand the County’s mosquito control program. These funds will give Bamberg County residents better results through improved equipment and additional insecticides.”

Effective mosquito control is important to the quality of life in Bamberg County and reduces the risk of mosquito-borne diseases. Residents can help reduce the mosquito population by regularly emptying any standing water, recycling old tires, checking garden beds for standing water, and cleaning swimming pools.

If you have bees on your property, contact the County and they will not spray near your hives. For more information on this grant award email info@bambergcounty.sc.gov.
