Re:     Bamberg County Hosts Lower Savannah Council on Governments Board Meeting

Bamberg, South Carolina (April 2025) –On Thursday, April 10, Bamberg County hosted the Lower Savannah Council of Governments (LSCOG) board meeting at the Bamberg County Airport to discuss the future of Meals on Wheels, senior transportation, and community development block grants.

According to their website, the LSCOG’s mission is to “work with and on behalf of local governments to develop, implement and administer plans, programs and projects in cooperation with local, state, and national stakeholders and to improve the quality of life for residents in the Lower Savannah Region” (Aiken, Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Calhoun, and Orangeburg Counties).

Last week’s board meeting addressed the following topics:

  • Bamberg County’s recent initiative to find a solution to fully fund the Bamberg County
  •  Meals on Wheels Program for the remaining 2024-2025 fiscal year
  • Transportation needs for the region’s senior citizens
  • Community development block grants and related projects
  • The new Denmark fire truck was purchased from block grant funds

The LSCOG board of directors was particularly impressed with Bamberg County Council’s efforts to fully fund their Meals on Wheels Program, which included passing a resolution to appeal for funding assistance from SC Lt. Governor Pamela Evette and the General Assembly. As a result, they plan to share this strategy with the rest of the Lower Savannah Region.

Govan Mayor Wilma Edmonds, who has recently been appointed to the LSCOG board, gave the invocation at the meeting. She stated, “I am honored to be a part of such a dedicated group who understands the value of our senior population and continues to prioritize community development in Bamberg County and the Lower Savannah Region.”

LSCOG board member and County Council Chairwoman Sharon Hammond added, “Bamberg County is proud to lead with compassion and action. Ensuring our seniors are cared for and our emergency services are well-equipped speaks directly to our mission of building a stronger, safer, and more connected community. We’re grateful to LSCOG for amplifying these efforts across the region.”

As an added bonus, the City of Denmark brought the recently purchased fire truck on site to demonstrate how community development block grants have been utilized.

“We appreciate LSCOG’s support, especially in our endeavor to continue to provide some of our most vulnerable citizens, our disabled and senior residents, with nutritious meals. We were also pleasantly surprised to see the state-of-the-art fire truck that will prove invaluable to our community,” stated County Administrator Joey Preston.
