Re: Bamberg County Awarded Body Armor Grant

Bamberg, South Carolina (May 2024) – Thanks to a $9,266 state-funded Body Armor Assistance Grant, five Bamberg County Sheriff Department officers will soon receive new body armor vests.

According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety’s Office of Highway Safety and Justice Programs (OHSJP), “The South Carolina General Assembly has designated non-recurring state funds for the purpose of providing financial assistance to local units of government for the purchase of body armor for its law enforcement officers.”

“This funding is critically important to the Bamberg County Sheriff’s Department and its officers,” remarked Bamberg County Sheriff Kenneth Bamberg. “Quality body armor is an essential component of effective law enforcement. We are extremely grateful to the SC Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) as well as Bamberg County administrators who collaborated on this effort. My deputies and I are committed to serving the citizens of Bamberg County, and these new vests will assist us in that endeavor while providing another layer of protection.”

Bamberg County Council Chairman Evert Comer said he is “thankful for the body armor grant” and knows the “five deputies receiving the much-needed vests are too. We appreciate the SC General Assembly and Department of Public Safety for helping us provide our officers with the best equipment possible.”

“Body armor vests, while essential to our officers’ safety, are expensive, and Bamberg County relies on grant funding to alleviate that financial burden,” stated Joey Preston, Bamberg County Administrator. “We are grateful to the staff members who sought and applied for this grant funding and to the SCDPS for recognizing Bamberg County Sheriff’s Department as deserving of this award so our deputies may be well-equipped to protect and serve Bamberg citizens.”
