Columbia, South Carolina (October 2024) – On October 15, Bamberg County Public Information Officer (PIO) Alisha Moore and Bamberg City Mayor Nancy Foster attended the South Carolina State Fair in Columbia and proudly showcased an exhibit highlighting the County’s rich history, natural heritage, and culture.

This inaugural participation in the SC State Fair is an excellent opportunity to “highlight Bamberg County’s rich historical and educational achievements, natural treasures, and community pride. This vibrant display, situated at the heart of the fair, gives attendees a glimpse into what makes Bamberg County a unique and beloved part of South Carolina,” stated Bamberg County PIO Alisha Moore.

At the center of the display are key representations of Bamberg County’s educational, historical, cultural, and natural assets:

  • Education and History: Featuring memorabilia and relevant fast facts, the exhibit honors two of Bamberg County’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs): Denmark Technical College and Voorhees University. Historical artifacts such as blankets and plates also spotlight the county’s diverse history and culture.

  • Sports Legacy: The display features one of Bamberg County’s most celebrated sports figures, William Hayward “Mookie” Wilson. Wilson, a Major League Baseball legend, famously played for the New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays. The exhibit also showcases local high school athletics, demonstrating Bamberg’s community spirit and support for the next generation of leaders on and off the field.

  • Natural Beauty and Outdoor Activities: Bamberg County’s connection and appreciation for nature and adventure is prominently demonstrated with a focus on turkey hunting, the serene beauty of the Edisto River, and agriculture.

Moore added, “This thoughtfully curated exhibit brings together the essence of Bamberg County, offering fairgoers an opportunity to appreciate its historical, educational, and natural wealth. It stands as a testament to the pride of Bamberg County residents and their commitment to preserving and promoting their unique heritage.”

Mayor Nancy Foster said she was “delighted to be part of Bamberg County’s first exhibit at the SC State Fair and always eager to share Bamberg’s rich culture and history with others. We are Bamberg proud for many reasons, and this exhibit is a testament of that sentiment.”

“We’re thrilled to be a part of the South Carolina State Fair this year and to show everyone all that makes Bamberg County special,” said Bamberg County Council Chairman Evert Comer, Jr.

Bamberg County Administrator Joey Preston thanked Mayor Foster and PIO Moore for their participation and representation at the fair and stated, “From our historic institutions to our beautiful landscapes and strong community, we hope this display will encourage visitors to learn more about our gem of a county.”

Visitors are encouraged to stop by the display and take a moment to immerse themselves in the heritage and spirit of Bamberg County.
