Bamberg, South Carolina (May 2018) – Bamberg County will recognize National Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 16, 2018 with a 10:30 a.m. ceremony at the Bamberg County gazebo at 1234 North St, Bamberg.
In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the week of May 15 as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week gives tribute to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty while serving and protecting others locally statewide and nationally.
In 1994, President Bill Clinton, through Public Law 103-322, directed that the flag of the United States be flown at half-staff on May 15. According to a proclamation by President George W. Bush in 2002,"Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week pay tribute to the local, state, and federal law enforcement officers who serve and protect us with courage and dedication. These observances also remind us of the ongoing need to be vigilant against all forms of crime, especially to acts of extreme violence and terrorism."
May 16, 2018 Bamberg County will observe Peace Officers Memorial Day and pay homage to past and present officers in Bamberg County. There will be a service at 10:30 a.m. at the gazebo in front of the Bamberg County Courthouse Annex Building at 1234 North St., Bamberg, SC.
The event is free and open to all citizens.
