Bamberg, South Carolina (November 2018) – On October 30, 2018, the Municipal Association of South Carolina’s Board of Directors announced that the City of Bamberg, in partnership with Bamberg County, was awarded a $25,000 Hometown Economic Development Grant. The grant funds will be used to transport the historic caboose from Ehrhardt to downtown Bamberg. Upon its relocation, the caboose will be refurbished, and will eventually be the site of a railroad museum.
The Municipal Association of SC offers Hometown Economic Development Grants to SC cities and towns to implement the economic development projects that will make a positive impact on the quality of life in their communities. The grant award to the City of Bamberg is one of thirteen grants announced state-wide.
The project is a partnership between the City of Bamberg and Bamberg County governments. The City of Bamberg owns the property where the caboose will be located. Bamberg County will direct the refurbishment of the caboose. The proposed railroad museum will honor the importance of railroads to the history of Bamberg County, in particular, the Hamburg Railroad that ran from Augusta, Georgia to Charleston, South Carolina, as the caboose will be located adjacent to the historic Hamburg Railroad line.
