Bamberg, South Carolina (August 2017) –On Saturday, August 26, 2017, the Denmark Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. hosted their annual Candle Lights in the Dark banquet in Denmark, SC. The well-attended event included awards for multiple honorees from diverse backgrounds.
Coach Willie Jeffries, Head Football Coach Emeritus at South Carolina State University, gave the keynote speech. Jeffries was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2010 after a successful college football coaching career. In a speech that drew frequent laughs, Jeffries told many anecdotes from his days as a successful football coach and said he was pleased to support the honorees at this year’s Candle Lights in the Dark program. Jeffries stated, “The honorees continue to be builders in the community, South Carolina, and the nation.”
2017 honorees included Bamberg County Administrator Joey Preston for his “innovative leadership and vision in leading Bamberg County during some difficult economic times…by improving the County in the areas of finance, infrastructure, economic development, and beautification/litter control.” Other honorees included Reverend Ted Robertson, for his “many years of spiritual support to the citizens of Bamberg County and unending support to the needs of the community and his dedication to litter control.” Reverend Robertson serves on the Keep Bamberg County Beautiful Board of Directors. Kappa Alpha Psi Alumnus Evert Comer, Jr., was honored for his service to Bamberg County as current Chairman of Bamberg County Council.
Additional honorees included: Brad Hudson of First Baptist Church of Bamberg, Robert Hurst, Jr. of Phoenix Specialty, Jerry Halmon of the Advertizer Herald, Kevin “Butch” Crosby, head football coach at Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School, and Franklin Bamberg, Jr. for his many years of work in law enforcement. The Kappa Alpha Psi Achievement Award was presented to Danny Singleton, Sr., for his outstanding accomplishments in the community.
