Re: SCAC Features Bamberg County’s Repurposing Projects in Summer Edition of County Focus Magazine
Bamberg, South Carolina (August 2024) – Bamberg County’s continued efforts to transform vacant, dilapidated buildings and properties into multi-purpose public service complexes have not gone unnoticed. In this year’s summer edition of County Focus Magazine, the SC Association of Counties (SCAC) features an article detailing how some counties have dealt with the issue of “hyper-vacancy, which occurs when vacant buildings or lots are so extensive and concentrated they begin to define the character of the surrounding areas.”
The article “Repurposing the Past: Breathing New Life into Old Buildings” shines a bright light on Bamberg County’s restoration of the former hospital building, airport improvements, and future projects involving the historic courthouse and abandoned retail property. Specifically, the Ed Darnell Law Enforcement Center, Health Department, and other public service entities housed in the old hospital as well as plans for a future Discovery Center/Museum and Grand Central Station community complex are highlighted in the article.

“Bamberg is experiencing historic growth and progress, and we are grateful others are taking notice of our hard work. Rome wasn’t built in a day, nor will abandoned properties be restored in a day, but Bamberg County Council is dedicated to improving the lives of all Bamberg citizens as much as we possibly can. Our council members, administrator, and staff spend most waking hours endeavoring toward this purpose,” stated Bamberg County Council Chairman Evert Comer, Jr.
County Administrator Joey Preston expressed his gratitude to SCAC and County Focus for acknowledging the concerted efforts of Bamberg County leaders to “provide residents the essential services they need while instilling a sense of pride in their community and increasing Bamberg County property value. Although the process can be long and tedious, requires the collaboration of local, state, and federal entities, and relies on the patience and cooperation of our citizens, as demonstrated in the County Focus article, our efforts have been fruitful.”
