Bamberg, SC — January 20, 2025—Bamberg County and Voorhees University came together to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life and legacy at the 2nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Breakfast. This uplifting event highlighted local leaders whose commitment to justice, service, and humanity reflects Dr. King’s enduring vision.

Honored with the prestigious Drum Major for Justice Awards were:

District 6 Bamberg County Council Member Evert Comer, Jr.
District 90 South Carolina Representative Justin Bamberg
Reverend James E. Holiday (Norway)
David Kenner (Blackville)
Lieutenant Eric Kirkland (Barnwell)
Elder Willie Priester (Olar/Ulmer)
Allendale Councilwoman Mrs. Lottie Lewis

The morning also featured a special presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to Mayor Dr. Gerald E. Wright for his exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication to public service.

Reflecting on the honor, Council Member Evert Comer, Jr. said, “Dr. King inspired us to dream big and act boldly for justice and equality. Being recognized alongside such outstanding leaders is truly humbling.”

Bamberg County Council Chairwoman Sharon Hammond praised the honorees, stating, “This event reminds us of the extraordinary individuals in our community who embody Dr. King’s values. Their work strengthens our county and brings us closer to his vision.”

Vice Chair Larry Haynes added, “Dr. King’s dream lives on through the unity and service we see today. These leaders inspire us to continue building a brighter future together.”

County Council Members Spencer Donaldson and Dr. Jonathan Goodman II attended the ceremony alongside representatives from the City of Bamberg and Denmark City Council. Their presence underscored the collaborative spirit and shared commitment to progress that Dr. King championed.

As the nation celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s holiday, the breakfast served as a heartfelt reminder of his profound question: “What are you doing for others?” The event honored those who answered that call and left participants inspired to further Dr. King’s legacy.
